Week 7, Thing 16-Wikis

Having been somewhat familiar with Wikopedia as an example of a wiki, I was delighted to discover that the use and application of wikis has expanded greatly. I liked the idea of using wikis to annotate the catalog giving more depth to the description of a book, this would be so helpful in matching books to readers or purposes. I also liked the idea of a community wiki where all aspects of information about a community could be easily found, updated and edited as necessary. I live in an area where we border another state and county and have 3-4 phonebooks to peruse depending on what direction we may be going; creating a wiki for services local to my area that didn't rely on county or state boundaries would be wonderful! In the library setting, reader's advisory wikis could be terrific as patrons interact with staff and each other. I could see a story program wiki that could be used by programmers to update and change programs on given themes and be able to share them. Working on meeting notes/agendas and collaborative planning of projects would be another library use of wikis. Best of all, I needed to read the Library 2.0 wiki , Librarian's Matterwhere I discovered an entry that outlined all the reasons we as librarians should be pursuing all this "techy stuff" even if we don't think it is relevant. The author was "right on" in her explanation of why learning about all of this is important. My only worry with wikis has been the chance of "bad" information being entered, I was glad to learn that the community using the particular wiki serves to enfore behavioral norms and content. Wikis can be very helpful and useful and I hope to explore more of them.

Week 6, Thing 15 Library 2.0

Upon reading the perspectives about Library 2.0, the idea of libraries being in a dramatic state of transition comes to mind. The expectations and methods of delivering information to patrons will continue to rapidly grow and change along with the continual changes in technology. It is my hope that the librarians of the near future will be adequately equipped to help guide and assist patrons with these new ways of dispersing information without losing the sense of place and personal connections that many patrons feel to their respective library and librarians. It is impossible to deny that great changes will be a major component of all things "library" as we now know them. The most positive aspect is that numerous people associated with the library have always been committed to being life-long learners and embrace new knowledge with a sparkle in their eye. I'm hopeful that by working together step-by-step and integrating the new ideas in a realistic manner that the libraries of the future will continue to benefit patrons of all ages.

Week 6, Thing 14 Technorati

Technorati opens up a whole new world of being able to access blog posts of interest through the use of tags. Not only can you search with tags in blog posts but also in a variety of other formats.

Week 6, Thing 13 Tagging

Tagging and using the Del.icio.us social bookmarking site was interesting! Libraries everywhere are sharing articles, sites, and information as they use this cool way to bookmark a variety of items. I read about a way that bookmarks could be linked to Amazon and then the page that had a title on that was wanted could then be connected to the library system to see if the book was available and order it quickly. I also read other 2.0 Learning participants who were finished their 23 Things and sharing their thoughts on the experience. Just hope I can finish, too!
It would be convenient to have the ability to access your bookmarks from multiple locations, I know there is much that I have bookmarked at home that would help me with program development when I am at work.

Week 5, Thing 12, Rollyo

Rollyo could be a useful tool to combine all those sites I frequently use for inspiration and ideas.
However, I did have some problems getting to my search roll again once it was created. After playing around a bit I found mine on the rollyo dashboard. Great to have those sites all in one place!

Week 5, Thing 11-Library Thing

I enjoyed using Librarything and hope to return to it again. It was interesting to get suggestions and see how many others have read the books I've read.

Week 5, Thing 10

Yahoo! Avatars U.K. & Ireland

I have created my avitar! I followed the directions and it seemed to be easy and fun to "dress" and change the avitar. Yeah, I did it!!

Saturday, July 7, 2007

Thing-9-Wow! I've been looking at tons of RSS feeds and found some I like and will be useful. I thought going through the bloglines over 200 topic list was the easiest way to search. I'm trying desparately to catch up and thought it might speed the process since I wasn't really sure what specific blog names to view. I like the idea of the word a day, joke of the day, and qoutes-they can provide expanded vocabulary, laughter, and inspiration in short order.
Merlin was a most useful and interesting site and it was quite interesting reading about all the tech updates! Forgive me, but I am blogged out for the day!!

Week 4: RSS & Newsreaders

Thing 8- RSS sounds like a cool timesaver! I wasn't able to use my email address that I've been using and had to use a home email to get verification to set up an account. My bloglines RSS account is using a different email than the rest of what I have been working on-will this make a difference?
